Did you ever know that Napoleon Bonaparte was here ?
There are two Napoleonic residences on the island: the first at Villa dei Mulini includes furniture, weapons, paintings, the Emperor’s library and the other at Villa San Martino preserves “Galatea” a statue attributed to Canova for which Pauline Bonaparte posed. Napoleon Bonaparte loved Elba so much and would never leaved Elba for all the gold of the world ! – he has confessed on his leaving day. Both villas testify to the life of that time about only ten months.
On the south – west of the island there are some small stone structures shaped like a dome, called Caprili. Some of them even about a thousand years ago were used by shepherd with their flocks as a refuge from the bad weather and from possible raids of pirates and Saracens. Many of these buildings have been destroyed by the weather time after time but there are still some well preserved exemplary which can be visited through tours of trekking on the slopes of Monte Capanne. Monte Capanne is the highest mountain 1019 meters of Elba island .
